Disgrace to Civil Rights

What has happened over the past 12 hours is a disgrace to the country, and towards the improvement of Civil Rights. I am not even talking about the presidential election, (In which case I could go on for pages and pages) I am talking about the votes of state-wide issues around the nation. If you haven’t been keeping up, several states had amendments up for vote to ban gay marriage and the results are shocking.

In all 11 states, the amendments to ban same-sex marriages have all been passed. The problem here, as one could clearly see, is one against the long struggle against discrimination. Voters from the southern states all the way up through the midwest have been swayed by a christian backed philosophy to do away with rights for citizens who do not follow, or believe in the same “values” as them.

If one were to take a step back from their fundimentals and christian backgrounds and look at the nation as equals, justice has not been served, and discrimination has been served out to these individuals in the same manner as slaves 200 years ago. Whether you agree with the stance of gay marriage should not matter. You as a straight person can enjoy the rights bestowed upon you by the government, but for someone involved in a same-sex relationship, they are unable to have these rights, and are lucky to prevent others from publicly showing their discrimination against them. Take a stance, go out on the edge, go against what your church tells you, and fight for equal rights for everyone no matter their race, religion, country of origin, or sexual preference.

even in eugene oregon they passed an amendment citing marriage between 1 man and 1 woman. i am apalled, and i hope that we can come around to love and understanding for all our citizens, not just the rich white straight men.
