Pope Benedict XVI

I said the next pope should have been a younger guy. What I meant by younger guy was much younger than Pope John Paul II when he became the pope. The complete oposite happened. Cardinal Ratzinger became one of the oldest popes, at 78 years of age.

In this world of instant media, satelite communications, and of course, bloggers, a young pope would have done wonders for the catholic church. Instead, the older, more conservative pope may do the opposite after all the smoke has cleared from this historic event.

Peter Kiefer of Reuters reported, “Most of the major TV networks went so far as to rent apartments — some for as long as five years — to get the best shots of both St. Peter’s Basilica and appropriate angles for the upcoming conclave at which the next pope will be elected.”

Now because of his age, maybe they should keep those apartments rented so they can capture history again in the next 10 years. At 78 years old, he may not last long.

i expect he was chosen because he won’t last long. after John Paul, there was some pressure to get someone ultra conservative. in a few years, when Benedict or whatever this dudes name is gonna be dies, the pendulum will be ready to swing in the other direction. Not a bad bit of politics, to my mind.
