Who Am I?

My name is John and I am a 27 year old systems administrator. I do web design. I like backpacking. I use WordPress. On this site I talk mostly about the things I like. This is a site about me.

Things I Do...

I have several projects I maintain, when they are done, I usually replace them with other things to keep me busy. Currently I am working on taking WordPress Junkie live. Contact me if you would like to help.

It is all Turkey

I am making it back to school after a week off for thanksgiving. I hope everyone else had a wonderful thanksgiving.

It is hard for me to get back into the swing of things, even though it was only a week, but I will be there in no time at all. I suppose I should get used to not going to school, I graduate in only 19 days. I am already looking into hobbies.

WordPress Junkie has been changed due to the community. I have renamed it wpjunkie. Sure it isn’t as explainatory, but then again, I simply missed the issue on using the name wordpress in the URL. It isn’t appreciated by the community, and I am not going to piss them off because they have given so much to me. (Kids, a note, this is synonomous with not biting the hand that feeds you)

So, with that, I again hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. I wish you all a great christmas, chanukah, kwanzaa, new year, and any pagen rituals I may have missed.

Finals Week

This week, as the title might have led you on to, is finals week. Needless to say, it has been a very busy time for me, and I don’t really have the time to post an updated, but I figured it would get my mind off of things if for only a brief period of time.

Tomorrow, one of my more demanding tests is taking place. Operations Management. Many students at AUM have strikes of fear course through them when they hear that class, mostly because of a certain professor there, and if you have taken this course from AUM, you know exactly who I am talking about. I don’t know these fears because I lucked out this semester and ended up with a new instructor for the class. Sure, I am lucky I don’t have the fears other students do, but I still have to take that test!

It has been difficult this week also because one of the big projects at work is getting underway and we are reaching the last few moments before it launches. I am talking about the Southern Writers’ Project. So, what have I had to do for the SWP this year? I launched a new website for them which you can get to by clicking above. Sure the design isn’t bad, but don’t judge my code. The code is awful and I am not very proud of it.

In addtion to the website, I have been working on another computer to build a confessional booth. We are putting it in a little known telephone booth inside the patrons’ room at the end of the main lobby. I am trying to make the system activate once it detects motion. So the idea is that a person opens the door to the telephone booth, and sits down. Once they sit down the system starts recording until it no longer detects motion (when the person exits the room). The main problem I have been having with this is software. There isn’t a lot of software that will detect motion and start recording video, rather most of the motion capture software only snaps pictures once it is activated.  If you know of something that will definately take video once motion is detected, please let me know. If all else fails, I have a point and click solution to this.

I will have to post pictures of the confessional booth once it is complete. I think it is a really cool idea, but I doubt it will get much use during the week.

I am also putting a couple of computers together to serve as scrolling scripts. The idea is that the script is started with a couple of lines and will be finished line by line by different people. These are experiments obviously, but still nifty ideas none-the-less.

Alright, enough of my time has been spent updating, and I probably need to get back to my studies, so I will bid you goodnight. Until next time.

La Zona Rosa, Cloverjam, et al.

Yesterday was busy day for me. Saturday’s are usually spent tending to sleep, rest, and maybe some yard work. This Saturday was a little different because I have the day-from-hell coming up at school and needed to get a lot of research and paperwork done. I spent several hours working on research and got a couple of pages written and decided that I needed to go out and enjoy myself.

Cloverjam was happening that night so I assumed Erika and I would go to that, but before it started Lindsey called Erika and said she and Bo and the George’s were going to eat a La Zona Rosa before going to the block party.

Ok, so I don’t really feel like reviewing the whole evening so let me give you the run-down. We ate Mexican food at La Zona Rosa, went to have drinks at Sinclair’s during cloverjam and then just walked around meeting people, talking to old friends, and meeting up with others.

The entire evening ended with Erika and I walking home with Emily and Trey. We stopped in the park and talked for a while before going our separate ways and calling it a night.

Hi, my name is John and I’m a workoholic

Over the course of the last two weeks I have managed to add more items to my plate than I am really able to digest. I quit the job I have had for the last six years. This should leave more room on the plate, but I wasn’t happy with that so I had to go and get another job.

I am the systems administrator for a theatre here in town. So I am going to work during the day, and at night, I am finishing my degree in Information Systems. This certaintly isn’t enough right? (Did I mention that I am a full-time student because I really want to finish my degree by the end of the year?) So what did I do? I picked up another job. I am also the network administrator at a minor league baseball team here in town.

Yeah, I am losing my mind right now, and am about to miss sleeping.

I am so busy in fact that I forgot I had even started this post 4 days ago, and have just gotten around to seeing it again. It isn’t much, but I have finally published it.

New Post, New Position

It has been a long time since I have last posted to ye ole blog. Other than the normal twitter updates, I have had much time to spend on updating my public written record, so at this time I would like to give a noteworthy update.

Enough talk about updating. I have a new job. I know. That was sudden. “John, why haven’t you mentioned this before?”

I will tell you why, because all of the people I know that read my blog I have already mentioned this to before. (As as side note, if I do know you, and you didn’t know I was taking new employment, well, I guess I didn’t know you read my blog.) I start work for a non-profit at the beginning of next week as a system administrator. I am not going to name the place, nor am I going to mention real names on here. (One does not kiss and tell, you know)  As a matter of record, I haven’t mentioned names and places on here for some time. I bet if you looked back into the archives of this very site you would find some mention at one point or another, which is quite alright, again, it is a matter of public record once it hits this page.

I am drasticly awaiting Friday. That is the day I say goodbye to the company I have worked for the last 6 years. Although I will be sad to leave, this is a positive move for me, and I hope those at my current employment can understand my reasons for leaving. (pssst, it has nothing to do with you!)

Again, just updating you on the essentials. Oh, and now would be a good time for me to welcome a new reader to my blog.  Hi Grandma, glad you could come a visit.

The Weekend of Pride and Justice, I don’t know why I name these things sometimes

It isn’t often that the weekend plate is filled with a variety of different options from which to choose. The problem with these decisions is there are so many good ones that it becomes hard to pick. The real problem isn’t in which ones you choose to do, but in how many of them you think you can handle in one day. Here’s the dirt…

Earlier in the day on Saturday, my friend Bo was having some folks over to play some video games and have fun while his wife was working. We went and played some games, watched the TV a bit, but mostly it was to hang out and have fun. A few hours later, we decided to go to tomatino’s and have dinner. Delicious by the way, and if you haven’t been to Tomatino’s you must go, easily the best Pizza in Montgomery, but probably the best pizza in the state.

After eating, my friend seth was having a going away party. Erika and I went there, to our old place The Carriage House. It was a good time. I got to talk to people I haven’t seen in months. But you know exactly what happens when you go to places like this. You start drinking, then there are people that show up, and you don’t want to talk with them. But did you know this? Nobody else wants to talk to them either. The only people who want to talk with them are them. As strange as it sounds, it is true, they just want to hear themselves talk. Annoying.

It was a good time, and I am glad I went, and before I go, I want to wish Seth and Chrystal a safe and happy travel to their new home in Nashville.
