This Is Illegal

I was listening to my normal set of podcasts this morning while working and heard this amazing funk sound beginning to flow through my speakers. When it finished playing, they said they saw it in a Jonathan Coulton blog posting.

Immediately after hearing this, I dropped what I was doing to hear it again. I went to his blog, and found the work of Kutiman. This is a mashup of what looks like over a dozen videos from youtube. He sampled bits and pieces from each video to create this amazing sound.

On top of all of this, what he did is illegal, and nobody with a head on their shoulders can really understand why we wouldn’t want this type of art in our lives. Without further delay, here is the video.

Flea Market Montgomery on Boing Boing

I was scrolling through my blog feeds today and what did I see? I saw a link for “Supremely Sammy Stevens, Flea Market Montgomery, YouTubebad TV ad: ‘It’s just like a Mini Mall‘” Wow. What made me happier? It was posted by Xeni Jardin. She is my favorite Boing Boing poster.

I find it funny how people outside of Montgomery are somehow drawn to this commercial. I don’t understand its appeal. I guess everybody I know that saw it on TV also thought it was bad. The difference in this and other really bad commercials is the trainwreck effect. You know, it is bad, but you just can’t look away. Most people that have seen this video don’t know there are three different versions of the commercial. Of those versions, the popular video on YouTube is the second ad. The first was nothing more than him telling people what Flea Market Montgomery sold. This one, of course, is famous because he made a remix of the first.

The other phenomenon about this video is the Ellen effect. Ellen Degeneres had Sammy on her show just because of the ad. This created a huge viral impact. Flea Market Montgomery does have sort of a cult status in Montgomery. Every now and again you see someone walking around town with a tee shirt or hat with the infamous “It’s just like, It’s just like a mini-mall” slogan. I just want people to know that are not in the Montgomery, Alabama area, No self Respecting Montgomerian Shops At Flea Market Montgomery!!!

So, it did come as a shock that Xeni wrote an article about the commercial, but I still just don’t understand the crazed following this has received online.

Bill Gates on “The Daily Show”

Last night on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, had Bill Gates as guest to promote Windows Vista. Bill Gates on The Daily ShowIt wasn’t has funny as I thought it could be. I am sure many of you were upset with the absences of John Hodgeman, probably better known as the PC on the Get a Mac advertisements by Apple. All I wanted him to do was to walk out there with a puppy dog face, impromptu of course, and hug Bill Gates. I could have said something witty, like “Father, it has been so long!” But, the hug alone would have made that hilarious.

Bill Gates did leave the show abruptly, sort of in an akward manner, as if he didn’t know what he was doing on the set. He was unaware of what was happening almost. His conversation seemed muttled, and quite nerdy. Let’s face it. Bill Gates is the king of all nerds. This is to be expected of the guy who made billions from making buying and selling an operating system.

I would have loved to have seen more of a comic approach to the interview instead of Jon Stewart’s quirky inputs, but it was still enjoyable. The whole password question was pretty funny. Anyway, if you haven’t seen it yet, I am sure it is on YouTube, you should check it out.
